Why a paper calendar still works
Phone calendars are powerful, but a wall calendar has things they cannot match.
Phone calendars can do almost everything. They remind you, sync across devices and share events with other people. So why do so many people still keep a paper calendar on the wall?
Because paper does a few things better.
You can see the whole month#
A screen shows a day or a week at a time. A wall calendar shows a month at once, with all its gaps and crowded stretches. You notice at a glance that the third week is packed and the fourth is empty, and you can plan around it.
It is always on#
A paper calendar needs no battery, no unlock and no app. It hangs in the kitchen, and everyone who walks past sees it. That makes it a good shared tool for a household, because nobody has to be invited to see it.
Writing helps memory#
Writing a date by hand takes a few seconds and makes you think about it. The act tends to fix the date in your mind better than tapping a screen. You often find you remember the event without looking.
No distractions#
When you open a phone calendar, a notification is just one tap away from something else. A wall calendar never pulls you into a feed.
Using both#
You do not have to choose. A good split is:
- Phone. Appointments with times, reminders and anything others need to be invited to.
- Paper. The big picture: trips, deadlines, birthdays, school terms, and the days that are for rest.
Once a week, spend two minutes comparing them. It takes no more effort, and your month becomes easy to see and hard to forget.
